
The forming rollers are the most critical wearing components of a roll forming machine. Their surface condition, profile accuracy and alignment directly determine the quality of the finished roofing or wall sheets. A structured maintenance routine can significantly extend roller service life, reduce profile defects and lower unexpected downtime.
Regular Cleaning
After each production shift, remove residual steel scraps, oil film and coating dust from the roller surfaces. Accumulated debris may scratch the coated sheet or leave surface marks during subsequent forming. Use a soft brass brush or cotton cloth rather than abrasive tools, since hard scraping can damage the roller's hard chrome layer.
Pay special attention to the roller gaps and the edges where material accumulates. Keep the entrance and exit guides clean so that the coil enters and exits smoothly without dragging.
Lubrication and Bearing Care
Check the lubrication of each roller bearing according to the machine manufacturer's schedule. Insufficient lubrication causes overheating, increased noise and premature bearing wear, which in turn affects roller rotation and sheet forming stability.
Use the recommended lubricant grade and avoid mixing different oil types. In dusty workshop environments, shorten the lubrication interval and inspect bearing seals for any leakage.
Roller Alignment Inspection
Periodically verify that the rollers from the first station to the final station remain aligned on the same reference axis. Vibration over long production runs can loosen fasteners and shift a station slightly, causing side-wave, asymmetric profiles or inconsistent edge dimensions.
Mark reference lines on the machine frame during installation so that alignment can be checked quickly against these marks. Any deviation should be corrected gradually rather than adjusting several stations at once.
Surface Condition and Wear
Inspect the roller surface for scratches, indentations, peeling or corrosion. Even a small defect on the working surface will repeat on every formed sheet. Minor surface damage can often be polished, but deep grooves or profile deformation require re-machining or roller replacement.
When the machine is switched between different profiles, check that the correct rollers are installed and that no mismatched station remains in the line.
Storage During Long Shutdowns
If the machine will be stopped for an extended period, apply anti-rust oil to all roller surfaces and cover the machine to keep out moisture. Store spare rollers horizontally on padded supports to avoid bending, and keep them in a dry, ventilated area.
Before restarting after a long shutdown, clean off the anti-rust oil, run the machine at low speed without material, and confirm that every roller rotates freely.
Technical Recommendations
Keep a maintenance log for each roller set, recording cleaning dates, lubrication cycles, alignment checks and any profile adjustments. This log helps identify wear trends and supports spare-part planning. Train operators to report unusual noise, surface marks or dimensional deviations immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled maintenance.
